Letter from Maria Duffin to Celia Duffin, 13 February 1916
Belfast. Feb. 13. 1916 My dearest Celia I was glad to
get yours of the 10th and
to hear that you did see
Olive even for a short time.
All the stupidity was pro-
voking. I was at Danesfort yesterday
and heard that Marjorie
had arrived safely but
that the Hughes girl & Dora were
at some other place outside
the town and that she
was with M. Perri, who has
quarrelled with the others
& a Mrs Baresoft, which does 2 does not sound exciting. Sam &
Ivan went on Thursday.
Iris has had a son &
all goes well. Great joy of
course. Peter arrived on Monday &
Dorothy took him to the Riddil
Hall on Tuesday. On Wednesday
he disappeared and we were
in great anxiety, but on
Thursday morning arrived
at Riddil Hall. Brought
back he ran off there again
on Friday. Again claimed
he has again disappeared.
Is he looking for Sheelagh?
He was not particularly
attached to Ruth. It is an
unforeseen nuisance and he
makes himself so dirty and disreputable. Emma writes that she is on
night duty again just when
she wanted three days leave
to go to Cairo. The hospital is
nearly empty and she thinks
they may not be asked to
sign on again. I think it
would be really better for
her to go somewhere else in
the hot season. No kittens yet but Julia &
Peter quite friendly. You seem to have had company
on the boat. Emma says
a Cheshire man told her
they had not one of the
officers who went out left.
I hope your soup turned out
well. If you will tell me 3 what is the best. I will send
you some more when you want
it. comparison so old has I can't think why Mrs
told me I had got the
& the water colour neither of
which came to me. I am
bidding for a nice old bureau
and a little stand I had a
fancy (she for both) for but am not
likely to get them. If sold
I shall try and sell the
one in the drawing room for
what I paid for it £7. After all the money is the
most useful thing to have,
these times! the sale is to
be the 18th. Your father and Ruth are lunching
with Aunt Margaret. She says 4 she does not feel lonely but
I feel rather sorry for her in
that big house by herself. We take tea at the farm
tomorrow to meet Helen Hultan.
I suppose as I hear she is
down. There is absolutely
nothing doing here. The goes on well and
is usually quite satisfactory
so domestic worries are reduced
to me. I am not a very good
hand at economising. I find
I can look after
but always want to butter,
eggs, or cream! Olive has 5 sent me a little book of eggless
cookery but I have not found
anything very tempting in it. I am reading a life of Jane
Austen by a nephew, gt nephew
& gt-qt nephew, but they do
not inherit her talent & are
far too minute and lengthy- Her
own letters are good. It is almost luncheon time
so goodbye darling
your ever loving
Mammy
This letter is part of a rich correspondence between various members of the Duffin family, a large prosperous family living in Strandtown, Belfast. Several family members served in the war, including Major Terence Duffin, who served as a staff officer with 107 Brigade, and later with Royal Irish Rifles; Major Charles G Duffin MC, Royal Field Artillery; and their sisters Emma, Celia and Dorothy who served as Voluntary Aid Detachments (VADS) in Egypt and France, and with the YMCA. This letter was written by Maria Duffin (1854 – 1954) to her daughter Celia (b. 1888). In this letter Maria recounts events at home, such as the actions of Peter who is making himself ‘so dirty and disreputable’ through his socialising with different women. Maria writes about Celia’s sister Emma 1883 – 1979), who is also serving as a VAD. She writes that Emma was told by a man that none of their officers who went out were left. Maria also writes about an auction she will be attending and the difficulties she is having economising, especially without eggs, cream and butter.
