Letter from Terence Duffin to Maria Duffin, 29 February 1916

B. E. F. Dearest Mamma You appear from the papers to be
having much the same weather
at home as we are out here — We had quite a heavy snow-
fall and had frosts at night
though it thaws a bit during
the day. With all the traffic about here you can
imagine the condition of the
38 2 D2109/10/1/B roads. Our supplies and
have become somewhat
disorganised, likewise the
mails— I got about from
if Ruth's Whip's tonight dating
back to the 21st! I hope
it will improve soon as it
makes matters very uncomfortable.
We are somewhat disorganised
at present. Bds
Hd Qrs and two Battns
are at present in what are
39 3 D2109/10/1/B
called rest billets: the other
two still remain in the trenches,
one for work only. Rest
billets mean that you are
beyond shot and shell but
work continues just the same—
railways to be built, reserve
line trenches to be improved etc.
etc. We have been recieving
orders and orders for
the last three days: at one moment
we are going right back to
40 4 D2109/10/1/B doing this in several places
lately. Col. Bob Wallace was
out here on a Cook's tour - He
stayed with the 109th Bds. and looked fat and flourishing
- the men were all pleased to
see him - many, of course, knew
him personally and nearly
all by sight. I don't
think however that trench
warfare would suit him.
45 5 D2109/10/1/B I have had letters from
Ruth, Edmund and Aunt
Ellen - all very welcome. Nothing much else to tell
you at present - I keep
fit though just recovering
from a bad cold which I
have now passed on to the
General. Best love
from your own
Terry
P.S. Many thanks
for the basin which
arrived here safely
How much do I
owe you for it?

This letter is part of a rich correspondence between various members of the Duffin family, a large prosperous family living in Strandtown, Belfast. Several family members served in the war, including Major Terence Duffin, who served as a staff officer with 107 Brigade, and later with Royal Irish Rifles; Major Charles G Duffin MC, Royal Field Artillery; and their sisters Emma, Celia and Dorothy who served as Voluntary Aid Detachments (VADS) in Egypt and France, and with the YMCA. A fairly chatty letter from the front in which Terry writes about the weather, his family, a visit to his battalion from Colonel Bob Wallace (which he knows personally). He also writes to his mother about conflicting orders for the men of is battalion.
