This letter is part of a rich correspondence between various members of the Duffin family, a large prosperous family living in Strandtown, Belfast. Several family members served in the war, including Major Terence Duffin, who served as a staff officer with 107 Brigade, and later with Royal Irish Rifles; Major Charles G Duffin MC, Royal Field Artillery; and their sisters Emma, Celia and Dorothy who served as Voluntary Aid Detachments (VADS) in Egypt and France, and with the YMCA. A fairly chatty letter from the front in which Terry writes about the weather, his family, a visit to his battalion from Colonel Bob Wallace (which he knows personally). He also writes to his mother about conflicting orders for the men of is battalion.

Our supplies and have become somewhatdisorganised, likewise themails— I got about fromif Ruth's Whip's tonight datingback to the 21st! I hopeit will improve soon as itmakes matters very uncomfortable.We are somewhat disorganisedat present. BdsHd Qrs and two Battnsare at present in what are 39 D2109/10/1/Bcalled rest billets: the othertwo still remain in the trenches,one for work only. Restbillets mean that you arebeyond shot and shell butwork continues just the same—railways to be built, reserveline trenches to be improved etc.etc. We have been recievingorders and orders forthe last three days: at one momentwe are going right back to 40 D2109/10/1/B doing this in several placeslately. Col. Bob Wallace wasout here on a Cook's tour - Hestayed with the 109th Bds. and looked fat and flourishing- the men were all pleased tosee him - many, of course, knewhim personally and nearlyall by sight.
