Letter from Terence Duffin to Maria Duffin, March 1916
your letter tonight telling me about
poor Aunt Margaret. Dorothys
letter came in the morning and I hoped from it all would be
well and then a few hours
later came yours. It seems
so unexpected and so fearfully
sad. Like you I had pictured
her settling down to happier days
2 when she had got over the blow
of Uncle Charlie's death. I am
sorry Marjorie was not with her
at the end though perhaps for her
sake it was better. My heart
aches for poor Charlie getting the
sad news out hereâ I suppose
he would be allowed home for a
time though all leave has been
stopped. What will happen
about poor Marjorie with Charlie
away and I suppose Sam may
be sent off at any time. It is
all so tragic. I will write you again soon
but at present I am over whelmed
as we are back in the line
again and taking over everything
from another Bde. always
means confusion, till things
settle a bit. Our rest
lasted six days and all that
time the men were working as
3
hard as in the trenches!! Better news about Verdun
tonight and talk of a separate
Turkish peace. Glad to know all are well
at home in spite of the weather. We have had snow here
for the last fortnight and it
is bitterly cold. Ever your own Terry
Letter from Terence 'Terry' Duffin to his mother, Maria. Terry writes about the death of Mrs. Margaret Duffin, his aunt. Terence is shocked at the news and expresses concern for his cousins Marjorie and Sam at home, and Thomas, who is off at war. Terrence and his men have taken over another Brigade and has been very busy. He writes that he has received 'better news about Verdun,' the bloodiest offensive of the war at the time. This letter is part of a rich correspondence between various members of the Duffin family, a large prosperous group living in Strandtown, Belfast. Several family members served in the World War , including Major Terrence Duffin, who served as a staff officer with the 107 Brigade and later with Royal Irish Rifles; Major Charles G Duffin MC, Royal Field Artillery; and their sisters Emma, Celia, and Dorothy who served as Voluntary Aid Detachments (VADS) in Egypt and France and with the YMCA.
