Wandsworth SW Wednesday
14-15 Nov 1915 Dearest Mamma Just a line here to tell you I am
in bed with a stiff neck. They thought
it was mumps yesterday so I was
hurried into quarantine here, but
a funny big red-faced Captain came
and looked at me yesterday and
pronounced it merely rheumatic.
In the meantime I stay in
bed, very comfortable with a
fire and Sister Brenden looks 2 after me. It only came yesterday
and I don’t suppose will last
long, but I have a bit of a
chill all through me. No more now as it makes
my neck ache to sit up in
bed, I am well looked after.
This is great news about D., I
am glad and hope he is very
nice, she sounds happy
any way. I am longing to 3 see him, and I'm sure you are. Ever so many thanks for the
rug, you are far too good, I
wish you hadn’t sent me such
a nice one, it is far too good. Best love,

This letter is part of a rich correspondence between various members of the Duffin family, a large prosperous family living in Strandtown, Belfast. Several family members served in the war, including Major Terence Duffin, who served as a staff officer with 107 Brigade, and later with Royal Irish Rifles; Major Charles G Duffin MC, Royal Field Artillery; and their sisters Emma, Celia and Dorothy who served as Voluntary Aid Detachments (VADS) in Egypt and France, and with the YMCA.
