Letter from Maria Duffin to Celia Duffin, 6 February 1916
Belfast Feb. 6 1916 My dearest Celia I am glad you
had a quiet night and
arrived safely. We missed
you very much. I wonder
will you see Olive, who
has gone to London to meet
Marjorie. You may see them
both possibly. No more
mumps so you are quite
safe. A letter from Aunt E's executors
this morning. I am left
£500 & a silver cream ewer &
sugar bowl; £450 is left to
my children in equal shares. 2 So I suppose you may count
on about £45 as
yours. When it will
come I don't know.
Bernard Squire gets the
portrait and £1000 & is sending
legalie, which may amount
to £2000 more, so he comes off
rather the best. Aunt E's
three nieces get £800 each
& someone else £300. Then there
are some specific bequests
of furniture etc. The rest
is all to be sold on the 18th.
I am rather pleased as
I had never to expect any
thing and am glad you
all get a little bit for yourselves. Nothing here has happened
since you left. I had tea with Butts on
Thursday & she was here
yesterday. I saw poor Mrs
O'Brien again and she told
me she has got an annunity
of £83 from the Local Government
Board. Which is a help,
poor thing! She looked
ill and her feet are dreadfully swollen. Dorothy & your father are gurt
off to the Garrett Campbells.
We have had much lightning
& thunder today and it is
very cold. I wonder how you feel in
Hicoola Terrace. 3 Peter comes tomorrow and I
hope won't hurry the arrival
of the kittens! There is absolutely no other
news, so goodbye darling.
It was nice to see you
and hard to let you go.
I wonder where we shall
meet next?
I see a rumour that the
Germans are pouring on
the Western Front, which
mahis me terrible. Much Love, darling
Your ever loving
Mother
This letter is part of a rich correspondence between various members of the Duffin family, a large prosperous family living in Strandtown, Belfast. Several family members served in the war, including Major Terence Duffin, who served as a staff officer with 107 Brigade, and later with Royal Irish Rifles; Major Charles G Duffin MC, Royal Field Artillery; and their sisters Emma, Celia and Dorothy who served as Voluntary Aid Detachments (VADS) in Egypt and France, and with the YMCA. This letter was written by Maria Duffin (1854 – 1954), to her daughter Celia (b. 1888). In this letter Maria recounts the family’s news for Celia, including the execution of the estate of ‘Aunt E’, who is recently deceased. Maria also mentions that she has heard a rumour that the Germans are pouring on the Western front, which has her worried.
