Letter from Terence Duffin to his sister, Dorothy Duffin, 12 November 1915
B.E.F.
France My dear Dorothy I have just heard the
good news through Edmund
and am most awfully glad
— best of luck to both of
you — Write and tell me
all about it if you have time,
which I suppose you haven't. Any how the War has done
you a good turn. I am
sure all at home will be pleased
about it. We are up in the fighting
line again — All getting
on first rate though it has
poured with rain and blown
hard continuously for 3 days
— the trenches are in a terrible
state. I was up today 2 and waded through water
and liquid mud up to my
knees — Most of the dug-
outs have fallen in and
likewise portions of the trenches
which means endless work
getting them repaired and
horrible discomfiture — Still
the men keep cheery through
it all and even prefer it to
their rest-billets when they
are doing fatigue work all
day — Any how the "Beach"
suffers as much from the
weather as we do — It seems funny when
You gaze out of a loop-hole
andof a trench and see the
German lines only a few
hundred yards away — in
fact in some places the trenches
are only 70 yards apart ! 3 The Brigade Hd. Ors are in
two houses side by side, in a
small village about a mile
from the trenches — Most of
the village has been fairly
well smashed up from time
to time by shell fire — the room
next to mine is a comlete"gonner"
A shell went clean through it
some weeks ago and no one
has thought it worth while
to square it up since — We
have a large cellar to retire
into if the occasion should
arise but so far we have
been left in peace. Apparently there is nothing
fresh doing at home. — I
am glad to hear Edmund
keeps very much better
and that there is still 4 a fair amount of work
going through the Office. I don't know if you
have seen Major Smith
lately if so, you will know
what our latest Divisional
changes are which I cannot
mention — I haven't seen
him for a long time. Well I must off to bed
now, I scarcely ever clear
the office work before 10 P.M
and it is now 11.30 P.M.and
a anotherdays work before me
tomorrow. Write soon if you can Ever your loving Terry 12/11/15.
