1 B/F/1/42 No 25 General Hospi. B. E. F. 18th June 1916 My very dearest Mother. We arrived here
last night about 7—30, it is
a very large Hospital but
rather quaint, it is a sea—
side resort which has been
taken over by the Military as
a Hospital, they are sweet
little Villas & we are billeted
in some of them also the
strand is just perfect with
glorious silver sand — which
I am enjoying whilst
writing this short note — I
do not think we could have
possibly been sent to a healthier
spot it is really quite like
Malta in some ways, there
are a great number of tents 2 & altogether we lead a very
out of door life. I was in the
ward this morning for a short
time, it is surgical but do
not know what sort of cases
yet but they all look to
me fairly well & wont be
here long. Some of the girls
seem very nice but none of
them have been here very
long. We had a great voyage out
leaving Charing Cross by mail
train & came across on
a mail boat which was
packed & we all just sat
on our luggage it was fairly
rough in parts. After having
lunch at the Bologne
Lower Hotel we all went
for a short walk round
the town — but did not
have much time as we 3 had to be back in
the hotel at 5 o'ck—
to see the matron who
packed us off here—
I am sending you a
riddle so as you may
guess the place I am at.
1st the opposite of soft 2nd the
5th letter in the Alphabet 3rd the
name of the man whose wife
turned into a pillar of salt—
you have got the name—
Before I close this I must
wish you a happy
birthday as possible under
the circumstances & every
blessing good wish & luck
I only wish I were at
home to enjoy it with
you —— In a few days
time I shall be able 4 to write you a better
account of every thing
I am very tired to—night
& want to get up for
6—30 Mass to—morrow
