Letter from Marie Martin to her mother, Mary Martin, 15 July 1916
very nice long letter &fell I could
not sleep without writing & letting
you know how very sorry I am
to hear you have a touch of the
flue how on earth did you get it
I hope by the time this reaches you
you will be quite alright again.
Reserve to go away for a change
as soon as you feel able. I was
so afraid before I came away that
you would get run down. that is
why I was so anxious you would
promise to go before O left â Are you
taking the boys with you they
will be company if you do â
Whatever you do take the greatest
care of yourself & let me know how
you are feeling. I suppose you saw 2 the family I hope & got a good tonic
What a terrible surprise for Ethel & V.
I should have got the fright of my
life I can quite imagine poor
Violets feelings as I know it would
have been the first thing I would
have thought. I am very glad
he did not take any silver. it
was too bad about the money
but I am so glad he did not
worry you up stairs, it was not very
good for you with your cold.
I have just received another letter
from MrsGarlton telling me Gerald
was wounded by scrapnel in the
arm â but seema bught & still
in duty, she is in a terrible state
about him I really do wish he
had been a little worse & got
out of it for a bit. We must
only pray & trust in the Sacred
Heart. I was so glad to hear 3 & read that delightful long
letter from Tommy. What a brick
he is I'm afraid he felt A. Bernards
death R.I.P. very much & he seems
to worry so about Uncle Frank
who I hope is something better &
going away soon. I sent Tommy
a cake from London I hope he
will get it. It is nearly 10.30 when light go
out as I have had a great many
interruption so must say good-
night. It looks like as if the
Hospital will be full up to-morrow
as I hear convoy after convoy arriving
it is so interest as they
come straight from Albert.
I only wish you could come
out &see my &tents. I am
very busy getting dressing, medicine 4 co-boards make out of all roses
& them making curtains of pretty
chintz. it has not been opened
yet but expect it may to-
morrow, if you do not hear for
a couple of days don't worry
it is only we have an extra
push â I am feeling A.1 my
feet are splinched not â
Give all the relations my love
& tell them to excuse me writing â
Get Violet to write me a card
every day just to saw how you
are. They ought to get P. O'Kelly
to sleep with them whilst you
are away as Granny says a
man is a great protection â With my fondest love & anxiously
awaiting to hear you are alright 5 able to go for a change take a good long
visit. How is
the cook working
& all the others
With a
tiny good
night kiss.
Your loving
& grateful
daughter.
Marie 6 P.S. By the way a Trooper
Boase of the London Yoemanry wrote & asked if he could come
out to see me, he was a very nice
patient & I think a gentleman.
Tommy any how I am sending
on his letter to you if you
think it wise ask him out
to tea. I nursed him for nearly
two months in Malta I think. Good-night Marie
Letter from Marie Martin (1892-1975) to her mother Mary Lewis Martin (1866-1955). This letter is the second that Marie wrote to her mother during her second tour on 15 July 1916. This is a long letter in response to one she received from her mother. She discusses family news and hopes that her mother gets over her flu soon. She also mentions that she expects the tents to be full tomorrow with soldiers as she can hear convoy after convoy arriving.Marie Helena Martin later known as 'Mother Mary', was a volunteer nurse during the First World War. She served in field hospitals in Malta, Leeds, and France working for the British army and later went on to become the founder of the Medical Missionaries of Mary (MMM).
