Letter from Marie Martin to her mother, Mary Martin, 15 July 1916
Mrs.Garttun yesterday
also one from Gerald telling me
he had been slightly wound
but was still on duty. They
are at present a good bit
behind the front line being
refitted, they seem to have had
a very bad time of it & all
Geralds officers were hit but he did
not think they were very seriously
wound. He seemed rather depressed
and said Brown the only other sur-
viving officer of the original Batt:
was killed in the last show &
that the ones they are getting are
hopeless. I do wish he had been
sent to hospital somewhere just
to keep him out of it for a bit 2 I am hoping there will be a letter
from you tonight and hope it will
report you all very well. Many
thanks for sending on Tommy's
letter. I am so glad you have
read it. He seems in his usual
form. Mrs G. said something
about him being sent to France.
Is it true, I do hope not as
I think he is in the safer place
just at present. We have not
been quite so busy these last
few day as we are evacuating
again & expect a big rush
to-day or tomorrow as we hear
our Calvary has got through
& that the lines of communication
have been cut. I do hope
this is true the nuns seem
very hopeful of it ending soon.
I must close now as it is time for 3 duty. We can hear the guns quite distinctly all to-day.
with fondest
love to
everyone
at home
hope you
are well
& going for
a change
your loving Marie.

She mentions that things are quiet as they have been evacuating, but they are expecting a rush of casualties in the next few days.Marie Helena Martin later known as 'Mother Mary', was a volunteer nurse during the First World War. She served in field hospitals in Malta, Leeds, and France working for the British army and later went on to become the founder of the Medical Missionaries of Mary (MMM).
