15-7-16 Dearest Mother, I had such a nice letter <lb/> M<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi>.<sic>Garttun</sic> yesterday <lb/> also one from Gerald telling me <lb/> he had been slightly wound <lb/> but was still on duty. They <lb/> are at present a good bit <lb/> behind the front line being <lb/> refitted, they seem to have had <lb/> a very bad time of it & all <lb/> Geralds officers were hit but he did <lb/> not think they were very seriously <lb/> wound. He seemed rather depressed <lb/> and said Brown the only other sur- <lb/> viving officer of the original Batt:<lb/> was killed in the last show & <lb/> that the ones they are getting are <lb/> hopeless. I do wish he had been <lb/> sent to hospital somewhere just <lb/> to keep him out of it for a bit

I am hoping there will be a letter <lb/> from you tonight and hope it will <lb/> report you all very well. Many <lb/> thanks for sending on Tommy's <lb/> letter. I am so glad you have <lb/> read it. He seems in his usual <lb/> form. M<hi rend="superscript">rs</hi> G. said something <lb/> about him being sent to France. <lb/> Is it true, I do hope not as <lb/> I think he is in the safer place <lb/> just at present. We have not <lb/> been quite so busy these last <lb/> few day as we are evacuating <lb/> again & expect a big rush <lb/> to-day or tomorrow as we hear <lb/> our <sic>Calvary</sic> has got through <lb/> & that the lines of communication <lb/> have been cut. I do hope <lb/> this is true the nuns seem <lb/> very hopeful of it ending soon.<lb/> I must close now as it is time for
