Letter from Marie Martin to Mary Martin, 4 October 1916
what you will think of
me for not writing for so
long but we have been
terrible busy since the
25th when I was sent
to Surgical 8 9 & 10
when we had some
very bad cases indeed
& Iam sorry to say
one man died he
has gas gangarine, it
was too late when he 2 got down here to amputate
he had three big opera
tion hoping to save his
life but he had his
whole septem poisonedâ
& died. We had several
of these cases but I am
glad to say the limbs
have been saved & they
are all getting on very
well. After we had been
open a few days we
were turned into the accute
surgical tents & got all
the Bad cases from
the other Tent. Just as 3 we were coming off the
other night a man
Haemoraged, we did have an
exciting time, poor man
he lost pints but we got
it stopped before it was
too lateâ We were just beginning
to get straight & our
cases getting better & I
was to have this evening
off when a convoy of
skins The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers were known as The Skins arrived & filled
my old tents M. 8
so had to go there 4 in my off duty time
& have been sent back
there for duty, it is really
hard luck as Ihave
had all the worry &
real hard work of the
other tents & now I have
to start alone on Scabies
& Impetigo which I know
absolutely nothing about.
However it is all in a days
work, I am feeling A1
nowâ but if you do not
here for a day or two
you know I am alright
but very busyâ Hoping all
the Mumps are overâ 5 & that you are keeping
very well. I am delighted
to hear about Uncle Frank being a little better.
& poor Tommy how
he must worryâ Iam ashamed to say
Ihave never written
but really Ihave been
waiting till Charlie
wrote & told me the
news himself as I
was not quite sure
it was public but
as Ihad not heard
I intended writing 6 when this terrible rush
came on & we have
had time for nothing
butworkâ I shall write as soon
as I can I never
received his letters.
Now Imust close
am dead tired Fondest love to
everyone at home Marie
Letter from Marie Martin (1892-1975) to her mother Mary. Marie writes of how busy her work has been, writing of some cases she has worked with. She describes the death of a man from gas gangrene, and that she has been assigned to work on scabies and impetigo, of which she knows little. The letter includes news on the health of Marie's uncle, Frank Martin (1870-?) and her brother Thomas Martin (1891-?). Marie explains that she is ashamed for having never written and that she was waiting for news from her uncle Charles Martin (1871-?) and that her work had become busy. The 'Skins' that Marie refers to arriving are the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers regiment.Marie Helena Martin (1892-1975) later known as 'Mother Mary', was a volunteer nurse during the First World War. She served in field hospitals in Malta, Leeds, and France working for the British army and later went on to become the founder of the Medical Missionaries of Mary (MMM).
