letters today and some from the family. I do hope you
did not give them any hint that I was expecting their
congratulations — as they 3 have all now written! This was
very far from what I meant when I wrote to you, which
was merely to find out how they took it with you. I
thought perhaps they would not like you becoming a temporary
dowager! There was no expectation of any letter from any
of them but they are very welcome all the same It is not easy to explain my position. Aspinall whom
I succeeded has gone to a Division. He was previously a
Brigadier in the Dardanelles. I should say that at GHQ
a GSO1 of a Div is regarded as the better and that outside
the GSO1 at HQ is looked upon as the best. My own job is
a peculiar one and I think only of a temporary character. With the dispatch done if I can complete it! it will be 2 easier but at present that is rather a weight in
