A letter from Marie Martin to her mother Mary Martin, 27 October 1916
nice letter of the 22nd enclosing Tommys
letter. you have no idea how it cheer
me up to hear of him as it seemed
agesâ what an absolute brick he is
never seems to grumble at any thing
& every is going through more things
he is. I think they must be having
a very trying time of it out there
they are so queerly situated with Greece
& the fighting seem bad enough at
times. I really think we are doing
very well now, the news from here is
very good & they are expecting to hear
great things in a day or twoâ
I must also thank you for the regular
P.C. with news of Uncle Frank I was
so glad to hear last night he had
been up for a bit & sincerely hope 2 he was none the worse after it. I hope
Aunt Maysie will not knock her self
up as I do not think she has been
very strong lately eitherâ I hope he
likes his two nurses as I find it makes
a great difference to the welfare of
the patient. I am sorry to hear Granny
has been hard up again, & poor
Aunt Sissy, I wonder if she would try the Dr I sent to Uncle Frank
It seems so terrible if she could be
cured not to give herself every chance
Oh I had such a nice long letter
from Aunt Eveleen, it pleased me more
than any thingas she told me how
you were looking etc & since I came out
here I have heard from very few of the
relation Of course I never have time to
write so cannot expect them to write but
she gave me all the family news in great
formâ She also sent me a ripping cake.
I want you the next time Dr. Beatty
goes to Greenbank to ask him for a 3 real good cure for chilblains as I
have them very badly on my feet
even up the shins of my legs & they
are just coming on my handsâ We
have had some very cold & wet days.
& with skin cases one is continually
washing & dabbling is some lotion
or other. I went in the other day to
B.â & bought myself a dear little
oil stove which warms the room
beautiful I am a present sitting
beside it & feel quite cosy. the only
thing is I think they are inclined
to give you a headachâ
I am enclosing you £2-0-0 & would be so
pleased if you would pay for a pr of
Shoes I had sent out to me hereâ
Also the next time you are in town
will you get me a very warm pair
of Fur gloves it does not matter how
clumsy they look so long as they 4 are warm easily put on & offâ Also
a navy blue silk scarf & one of those
Shetlan jackets that I could wear under
my overal but over my dress if you
can get one in sax blue all the betterâ
I am sending you an other £-1.0-0
as you will not have quite enough
& if you have 12/-6 over will you
send it into Arnotts for 3 aprons they
send out to me at the beginningâ
Should you have paid for any of these
things just keep the money instead
Hoping this is not giving you a great
deal of troubleâ
What a bout apresent for Charlie
O'Kelley I will let you know in a
week or two if I can get some little
thing out here for themâ
I & Miss Paul gave our men a tea
party yesterday afternoon it was
rather a undertaking as we happened 5 to fill up on Thursday morning at
5 A.M. & just one very bad case of
Erysipelas among the lot which gave
me avery anxious day as he was
put on the D.I. list & needed agreat
deal of watching but I am glad to
say he was transfered to a room
to him self at 4 O'ck which left me
much freer for the tea which was
a great success but is a thing
that can only be done very seldom
as it cost a fair sumâas you will
knowâ however it is better spent that
way than wasted on trash for one
self & they do enjoy it & deserve it
I have such a nice lot of men who
do so much for meâ you see in
skin wards we only have one orderly
& he has to do all the dressing we
cannot do, like Seabees all overâ
so that means the Sister in Charge has to 6 get the patients to do all the ward
work as well as the kitchen, it is
really much for more difficult for
us but I have been extremely lucky
& have 4 topping men, one is just
like a father to us, one does feel such
a brute some times when one thinks
of all they do for us and how little we
can really do in returnâ
I have not heard from Gerald Cutify
so do not know where he is I
wonder if he has been home in the
mean timeâ Please give every one
my fondest love also Nana & tell
her I shall try & write very soon I
am ashamed to think I have
never written â how is she working
on â by the way did Nidia Kâ
ever turn up to see you was it
not funny how I managed to
get overâ they have teased me so
much here because I am such 7 a bad walker. I thought I would
have a try & succeeded but I did
suffer for it the stiffness was something
terrible however it did me no
real harm & I walked over 15
milesâ I hope her mother is better
My six months are very nearly over
& am expecting every day now to
be asked to resign and will get what
for from the Matron it will be
nearly as bad as Granny's intirocen
& one has to give such a long reason
for resigning, however I am coming
home & looking forward to it to &
perhaps after Xmas Ethel would
like to come away for a bitâ
I feel sure it will do her good
she has had the hardest part all
the time & I feel that I have
done a little & can always find
some work at homeâ 8 I am longing to be at home
with you all again
How is Uncle Charlie these times
I have not heard from him
for ages I shall write to
him in a day or two
Fondest love dearest Mother
and Cheer Oh. I think the war will
soon be overâ Your most loving and ever
grateful daughter Marie
A letter from Marie Helena Martin (1892-1975) to her mother Mary Martin in Dublin. Marie is writing home to tell her mother the news from the front and to hear about the news back home. In this letter Marie asks her mother to send her out some gloves, a scarf and a coat. She writes that her six months are nearly over and that she hopes to be returning home soon. Marie focuses on the family news that she has heard and gives advice to her mother about the health of her relations.Marie Martin, later, known as 'Mother Mary' was a volunteer nurse during the First World War. She served in field hospitals in Malta, Leeds, and France working for the British army and later went on to become the founder of the Medical Missionaries of Mary (MMM).
