27th May, 1916. Sir, I am directed by the Lords Justices to
enclose, for the information of the Secretary of
State, a copy of a Proclamation made by Their Ex-
cellencies on the 26th instant, directing that a
state of Martial Law shall continue to exist
throughout Ireland until further order. I am,

This is a letter from Edward O'Farrell (1857-1926), the assistant under-secretary for Ireland, to Sir Charles Edward Troup (1857-1941), the permanent under-secretary of state at the British Home Office. This letter was written a month following the Rising and relates to the enforcement of a state of martial law in Ireland. Enclosed is a written statement regarding martial law and a poster on same.
