Letter from J. Houlihan to Sir Robert Chalmers, 8 June 1916
1
National Health Insurance Commission,
Dublin. 8th June 1916.
No. 46,060/1915. Sir, I am directed by the National Health Insurance
Commission (Ireland) to state, for the information of
His Excellency the Lord Lieutenant, that a prosecution
for non-compliance with the provisions of the National
Insurance Acts has been instituted against Mr.William
Hastings of Ballinasloe and the case is fixed for
hearing on the 17th instant. Our local Solicitor is
of the opinion that it would be desirable, if possible,
to have a Resident Magistrate in attendance at the
Ballinasloe Petty Sessions on the day named and he has
requested this Commission to make representatives to
that effect to the Lord Lieutenant. I am, Sir,
Your obedient Servant, John Houlihan The Under Secretary,
Dublin Castle.

This letter was addressed to the Under-Secretary for Ireland, Sir Robert Chalmers (1858-1938). Chalmers was sent to Ireland as under-secretary, replacing Sir Matthew Nathan who had resigned along with Augustine Birrell , his chief secretary following the Easter Rising in 1916. The letter concerns the prosecution of Mr William Hastings for non-compliance with the provisions of the National Insurance Acts.
