Letter from C.H. Hunter to Sir Robert Chalmers, 6 June 1916.
Dublin To The Under Secretary,
Dublin Castle Regimental Pay Office, Beggar's Bush Barracks, Dublin. 6th. June, 1916 Sir, I have the honour to state that after having
read Mr. Moorhead's letter I agree with his conclusion. As, however. the War Office has decided
that I am to do not h ing which might prejudice a prosecution
I would suggest that the matter be referred direct to that
office for decision. I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your obedient Servant C.h.Hunter.
Lieutenant Colonel,
Regimental Paymaster, Dublin Hand written in red ink Sir. It would be convenient
to have a report from the
Police as to Mrs Morgan's
means and ability to
pay the instalments
in accordance with the
regiment order.

Letter from the regimental paymaster in Dublin to the Under-Secretary for Ireland, Sir Robert Chalmers (1858-1938). This letter refers to the case of Mrs Morgan, the wife of the deceased Private Morgan of the Royal Irish Rifles. Mrs Morgan was charged for obtaining an over payment of separation allowance and was instructed to repay the excess in installments. According to previous letters she has proved reluctant to pay the full installments but the Crown Solicitor for Belfast, John Moorhead (1859-1936), believes it is preferable to wait for payment rather than prosecute her. In this letter the regimental paymaster agrees with Moorhead but is unable to do anything which may prejudice a prosecution. Sir Robert Chalmers was sent to Ireland as replacement under-secretary for Sir Matthew Nathan, who had resigned along with Augustine Birrell, his chief secretary, following the outbreak of the Easter Rising in 1916.
