CAVAN 1st day of March 1916.
No 9278: 1916.
County of Cavan. Sir/- I am in receipt of a letter from
the Local Government Board to the Under Secret-
ary of the 28th ulto. and with reference to
the portion of same which you say I am to reply
to, I have to state, that on the 10th February
I received a letter from Mr Newell asking to
have certain answers given to queried which
he furnished to me. I found considerable diff-
iculty in complying with some of them as they
occurred some considerable time ago. I made
inquiries through the Police for the purpose of
ascertaining how the respective amounts set
out in the queries were made up, and have
just received replies, and have to-day sent
on same to Mr Newell. I had a letter from
this gentleman on the 24th ult. asking for
these answers, and replied to him on same day
explaining the delay. Yours faithfully

This is a letter from Louis C.P. Smith (1867-1923) the Crown Solicitor of Cavan, to Sir Matthew Nathan (1862-1939) Under-Secretary for Augustine Birrell (1850-1933) the Chief Crown Secretary of Ireland. In the letter Smith is telling Nathan his side of a of a story after Nathan received a complaint from a Mr. Newell about the delay of Smiths work. Smith claims it is due to the cases happening a considerable time ago.
