Letter from William Field to Augustine Birrell, 29 March 1916
is a candidate for the late Mr Malachi
O Kellys position. Mr O Neille has been
a great friend of many, having succeeded
in ousting the Tories from Pembroke
Therefore as he is fully qualified I hope
you will give his claim favourable
consideration & oblige with thanks
for past courtesy & best wishes, hoping
you are keeping well notwithstanding
the terrible weather & blizzard of criticism. Personal Wm Field
This is a letter from William Field (1843–1935) an Irish politician and Irish Parliamentary Party MP for the St. Patrick’s division, to Augustine Birrell (1850-1933), the chief secretary for Ireland. The letter is written after the death of the former chief crown solicitor Sir Malachy Kelly (1850-1916). The letter concerns the application to the position of chief crown solicitor by Charles P. O' Neill (b. 1867), an Irish solicitor and member of the Irish Parliamentary Party. In the letter Field discusses O'Neill's position as as chairman of the Pembroke district of Dublin and asks that his application be given favorable consideration.
