Letter from Edward W. Mooney to Augustine Birrell, 4 April 1916
St John Street, W.
Dublin. April 4th. '16 Right Honorable and Dear Sir, I understand that Mr. Charles
P.O'Neil, Solicitor, Dawson Street,
is a candidate for the Crown-
Solicitorship rendered vacant by
the lamented death of Sir Malachy
O'Kelly. As you will likely have
to deal with his application may
I take the liberty of laying before
you an appreciation of the Clergy
of his Church. He has our fullest
confidence, esteem and respect. 2 We look upon him as an
honest, honorable and highly-
gifted member of the legal
Profession. He is a firm upholder
of Law and Order, a friend of
John Redmond and the National
Party and consequently an ardent
and strenuous Supporter of the Government. We firmly believe that if appointed
to the High Office, now vacant, He will
discharge its various duties as
conscientiously and efficiently
as his predecessor. 3 Hoping you will kindly
pardon my intrusion I beg to remain,
Right Honrable Sir,
Your obedient Servant (Rev) Edward W. Mooney
S. Prior
This is a letter from Reverend Edward W. Mooney (b. 1846), an Irish Catholic priest to Augustine Birrell (1850-1833), the chief secretary of Ireland. The letter is written in the context of the death of the chief crown solicitor Malachy Kelly (1850-1916). The letter acknowledges the vacant position and the application of Charles P. O'Neill (b. 1867), a solicitor based in Dawson Street Dublin and member of the Irish Parliamentary Party for the position. In the letter Mooney recommends O'Neill as his priest, stating he is responsible, respectful and confident. He also notes that O'Neill is a good friend of John Redmond (1856-1918) leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party. Mooney ends asking of a pardon for his intrusion
