Letter from William Seddall to Augustine Birrell, 14 April 1916
Dublin JUNIOR CONSTITUTIONAL CLUB,
PICCADILLY, W. 14th April 1916 Sir I beg to offer myself
for the vacant position of
Chief Crown Solicitor for
Ireland. I was admitted a
solicitor in the year 1893
and have since practised
in Dublin. I am a member
of the Council and past
Vice President of the Incorporated
Law Society of Ireland. 2 I would respectfully refer
you to Mr. Walter Long President
of the Local Government Board,
Sir Edward Carson, and Mr
James Campbell, Attorney
General for Ireland, who
are all well acquainted with
me. I remain
Sir
Your obedient Servant W Seddall
This is a letter from Augustine Birrell (1850-1933), the chief secretary of Ireland to William Seddall (1869-1958), an Irish solicitor. Birrell had support from many leading Nationalist and Unionist leaders as chief secretary, however the day after the 1916 Easter Rising Birrell resigned due to his in ability to anticipate or squash the rebellion. William Seddall was an Irish solicitor based in Dublin, a Unionist and well know for his participation in Dublin courts. The letter regards the vacant position of chief crown solicitor due to the death of former chief crown solicitor, Malachy Kelly (1950-1916). The letter opens with Seddall offering his application to the position, going on to outline his history as a solicitor, stating he is a member and former vice president of the Incorporated Law Courts of Ireland. Seddall goes on to refer Birrell to Walter long (1854-1924), the president of the Local Councils Board, Edward Carson (1854-1935), Unionist leader and James Campbell (1851-1931), attorney general for Ireland.
