This is a letter from Andrew Philip Magill (1871–1941) an Irish civil servant, to William Field (1843–1935) an Irish politician and Irish Parliamentary Party MP for the St. Patrick’s division. Andrew Philip Magill acted as private secretary to Augustine Birrell (1850-1933), the Chief Secretary for Ireland. Magill assumed the role in 1913 and continued after the resignation of Birrell in 1916. The letter acknowledges a previous letter of recommendation made on the part of William Field for Charles P. O’Neill to assume the vacant role of Chief Crown Solicitor.
