5 July BROOKS'S,
ST JAMES'S STREET. Dear Sir Edward. My excuse for writing
you is the fact of
the tremendous crisis
we are in. It is one of life &
death to us in the
S & W. - The North (six counties)
are comparatively safe
but, is not that so on 2
the grounds that the matter
is permanent. You of all people have
the power of having
the true facts as to
this. May I with
all earnestness appeal
to you to do so ?
and, before the meeting
at the Carlton on
Friday. If I am unreasonable
forgive me. but, Sir E.
Carson's name is being
bandied about in a
way that hurts me. I
am telling you the plain
truth. You have ever
been more than kind
to me, hence my feeling
that I can write thus
to you. I have worked and struggled
for 30 years in the
cause of loyal Ireland,
is it to be said that
now, owing to what can 3
surely be merely an error
of Judgement, or a mis ap.
-prehension, that because
the plain truth regarding
"permanent" or "temporary"
was not disclosed, that
the whole cause of loyal
Ireland, N.S.E.W., was
to be eternally and
irretrievably wrecked?
I can't & won't believe
it. My usual regards to Lady Carson. Always Yrs J. Mackey Wilson
Letter to Edward Carson (1854-1935). Carson was a prominent Unionist Politician. Originally a practicing solicitor from Dublin, Carson's opposition to the proposed third Home Rule bill made him the figure head of Unionism throughout the island. He was the centerpiece of the speaking tour that culminated in Ulster Day (28 September 1912), when just under half a million signed Ulster's solemn league and covenant pledging to use ‘all means which may be found necessary to defeat the present conspiracy to set up a home rule parliament in Dublin’. Carson inaugurated the Larne gunrunning in 1914 which armed the UVF, many of whom Carson would encourage to join the British Army throughout the First World War.
