and Ulster's position, of which Bates has
been keeping you informed up to date,
you will be glad to hear that arrange-
ments have to-day been made which
will I think put Ulster Unionists &
the Ulster Division in the right position.
Bates showed me your letter and
allowed me to show it to the Lord Mayor —
A new advertisement (recruiting) comes
out tomorrow in which men are invited
to enlist in any battalion or Division
they select, no regiments or battalions
being mentioned — The Lord Mayor is appointed L Sole
Director for Ulster — All papers signed
in Ulster are to be handed him 2 (2)
to be dealt with by a Committee re
appointed by him — The mistake in the first instance,
or the intention of Dublin, to divert
Ulstermen to the Reserve Battalions
of the Irish Divisions, has been rectified —
andUlstermen now can select battalions
of the Ulster Division as they wish — Up to last night, ( I have not
seen todays return ), there were about
1000 answers to the misleading recruiting
appeals, three quarters of which
were for the Ulster Division, the
signers taking the precaution of
adding Ulster Division to Royal Irish
Rifles — of the other quarter the
Dublin authorities at once agreed to
day to give the signer the option of
adding Ulster Division when inadvertently 3 (3) 34 Bedford Street,
Belfast
left out — So you see matters have now been
put straight — Excuse this letter but as I have
been so mixed up in the negotiations
of the last two days I thought you
might like to know results — The Lord Mayor is Thoroughly aware
of the position and will see that
the Ulster Division interests are well
