Letter from Peter Mooney to Katie, November 20 1916
& Putters alright this morning.
Unfortunately they are the wrong
ones. You know the riding
Breeches with no strapping
they are firstly a Kakhi
colour. The Putters will
hardly do you can get a
good thick pair in Dublin
You can get them where you
got the Numerals & send them
on. It will send back the
others when I get them 2 The sort of thing Picquet
duty is as follows. We go
on Duty at 4:30 until 6:06
next morning. We have to be
on the watch live farm at
a time minding the Horses.
The night I was on duty I
was out from 6.06 until 8.06
& then again from 12.02 until 2.06.
We have to see that nothing
happens the Horses during the
night. It is a lonesome
job. I am glad poor old
Barry is alive still I hope
he lives until I see him
again. 2) I got a letter from Chris
Meehan and this morning which
I enclose . He is going on
well thank God . I have
found out the name of the
Col. It is John Harvey
He must be an Irishman
by his name. You can
show Chris Meehans letter
to his mother . John Meehan
is in England still. The
little dog was with me
the night I was on Piquet
Duty he is a nice little fellow
I suppose Paddy goes up
often to you I hope he does 3 4) I am glad you had such
a good time in the Castle
on Saturday evening you all
deserve great credit for the
way you are working. I hope Tommy enjoyed his
ride on the motor bike
I will have a great time
riding it when I get home.
Does John ever come over now.
I hope he is minding the
Greyhounds well. I have no
more to say at present. So
Good-Bye & God Bless you
all. Peter Mooney
Orphaned at age 7, Peter Mooney and his sister Katie Mooney were raised by their uncle William and his wife Mary in Caulstown. While there are no surviving enlistment papers for Peter, his War Badge Index Record shows his enlistment date as 18 October 1915. He served with the Royal Artillery and later transferred to the Royal Engineers where he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He served in several places at the Western Front, including Ypres, St. Omer and Passchendael. Peter and Kate were avid correspondents. This letter part of a collection of over ninety surviving letters.
