Letter from Peter Mooney to his sister Katie Mooney, 8 October 1916
on Friday also your letter. I am glad to hear that all is so well. I would have wrote before now but
we were on the march & not settled down. At
present we are away from the firing line & will be
for some little time. The weather is bad at present
it rains every day which makes things very uncom-
fortable. It was very good of Mr Moore to send
his reafer and binder to cut the oats without being
asked I will write to him in a few days. The
crop of oats appears to be very good. I am greatly
pleased with Hickey he seems to mind everything
very well. Everything in the parcel were alright
I have got plenty for a while now. Jims brother
must have got it very rough I hope he will be
alright soon. I hope you will keep on improving
in health above all do not worry yourself
bright days are coming for us all the damned Hun
cannot last much longer now. Remember me to all
the neighbours around the place. I hope all are well.
In your next parcel send me on a Tobbaco pouch.
I will write you a longer letter when I get settled down
again. I now say Good Bye & may God Bless & keep you
all. Peter Mooney
Peter Mooney was born 5 February 1886 in Folistown, Dunboyne, Co Meath. Orphaned at age 7, he and his sister Katie (b. 1884) were raised by their uncle William and his wife Mary in Caulstown. While there are no surviving enlistment papers for Peter, his War Badge Index Record shows his enlistment date as 18 October 1915. He served with the Royal Artillery and later transferred to the Royal Engineers where he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He served in several places at the Western Front, including Ypres, St. Omer and Passchendael. Peter and Kate were avid correspondents. This letter is from a collection of over ninety surviving letters.
