=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*= Dear Fr. Provincial, I deeply regret to inform you that Fr.
J.J.FitzGibbon was killed two days ago, the 18th of
September. The news has only just reached me, without
any further particulars, and I am sending it on to you
immediately. When any further details come in, I will,
of course, forward them to you. We are very grieved at his loss, which
is a considerable one for the Chaplains' Department and
the Catholic religion out here. For the two years and a
half he spend in France, he has done excellent work as a
priest, and has endeared himself to both officers and men.
He has also been mot helpful as the Senior Chaplain of
his Division, in guiding and assisting the other chaplains.
He was naturally gallant and fearless. He has only just
returned from a pilgrimage to Lourdes, where he spent
eight days from the 26th of August to the 4th of September. I beg to offer you and his brethren
