Letter from Dom Stephen Rawlinson (1865-1953) to Fr Provincial Thomas V. Nolan (1867-1922) regarding the announcement of Fr. Fitzgibbon's death. Fr. Thomas Nolan became the Provincial of the Irish Province of the Society of Jesus from 1912 to 1922. Besides that, he was a Distribution Committee member responsible for the welfare and distribution of the Belgian refugees who had found refuge in Ireland on account of the World War I. Stephen Rawlinson served as head Catholic Chaplain for the British Forces in France from 1915. He was Mentioned in Despatches five times, and awarded the Portugese Order of Christ, CMG and OBE.

J.J.FitzGibbon was killed two days ago, the 18th of September. The news has only just reached me, without any further particulars, and I am sending it on to you immediately. When any further details come in, I will, of course, forward them to you. We are very grieved at his loss, which is a considerable one for the Chaplains' Department and the Catholic religion out here. For the two years and a half he spend in France, he has done excellent work as a priest, and has endeared himself to both officers and men. He has also been mot helpful as the Senior Chaplain of his Division, in guiding and assisting the other chaplains. He was naturally gallant and fearless. He has only just returned from a pilgrimage to Lourdes, where he spent eight days from the 26th of August to the 4th of September.
