Letter from Fr Francis M. Shaw to Fr Provincial Thomas V. Nolan, 1 May 1918

1 Rec 23/ May 1 May 1918 My dear Fr Provincial,
P.C. I wrote to FrFarley last week
giving him nine Masses for April, and the reason
why there were no more. I am still on the flat
ofmy back. The doctor does great sounding all
over me, but seems not tobe able to find what
he's looking for. I have no pains, no tender spots, to
lay hold of. He says I am mending now, but
that I may be a week or ten days more in bed â€”
I'll eat up all Mesopotamia when I'm well again. I think it will be best to address any letters
tome to Archbishop's House, Wodehouse Road,
Bombay, until further notice, as I shall be sent
down stream to recuperate, and shall not have
any definite address for some time. I heard a
rumour a day or two ago that Fr Alban
Goodier, has been made Archbishop ofBombay. I
often met him at Wodehouse Road, and at St. Xavier's
High School, where he was Rector. The
Governor ofthe Presidency, Lord Willingdon, often
went out ofhis way to give honour to Fr Goodier
at public functions, banquets etc. I hope all the Province is well. The chaplains
must have a bad time in France now. From what I
Can learn from the 'Baghdad Times,' the Lord is not
going to let poor old Ireland be hunted out as food
for the German guns. Cardinal Logue was hinted at

Letter from Francis M. Shaw (1881-1924) to the Father Provincial Thomas V. Nolan (1867-1941) regarding Francis M. Shaw's health. Francis, or Frank, Shaw SJ was born in Ennis, county Clare. He was ordained on 31 July 1916 at Milltown Park, Dublin. Fr Shaw joined the war early in 1916, working in the 16th General Field Hospital at Le Tréporte. In 1917, possibly due to his nationalistic views, Fr Shaw was dispatched to India, and later to Mesopotamia.Fr. Thomas V. Nolan was the Provincial of the Irish Province of the Society of Jesus (1912-1922) and was a member of the Distribution Committee which looked after the welfare and distribution of the Belgian refugees who arrived in Ireland as a consequence of the First World War.
