F.S Archbishop's House Wodehouse Rd Bombay 22 Sept. 1918 Dear Reverend FrProvincial, P.C. I am still at 65 British General
Hospital, but keep the old address. Masses for
September for FrFarley, 20. It is the first
time since I don't know when, that I have the
full number to report. I am writing tohim also, in
case of accidents. All still going well. The
latest addition toourmedical staff is Doctor
Dillon-Kelly, FrRobert's brother. I was delighted
when I found who he was, as I am 'stranded' as
far as Papist officers are concerned. He told me
FrJames Daly was in a private asylum. I did
not know that. Some one sent the 'Mungret
Annual', I suppose it is Fr Frost. It was very
welcome. I mentioned to Fr Farley in my last
note that I had met Frank Flanagan. I
hear from an old Ranger that FrHartigan's
grave in Amara is well cared for, and has a
good Cross erected over it. He says also it is
marked out with a special border. Clouds have once more appeared in our skies,
and two days ago it rained heavily round the
horizon. There is hope at last. I commend myself tothe prayers ofall.
Your Reverence's servant in Christ, FrancisMShaw S.J.
Letter from Francis M. Shaw (1881-1924) to the Father Provincial Thomas V Nolan (1867-1941) regarding Shaw's worries about medical staff. Francis, or Frank, Shaw SJ was born in Ennis, county Clare. He was ordained on 31 July 1916 at Milltown Park, Dublin. Fr Shaw joined the war early in 1916, working in the 16th General Field Hospital at Le Tréporte. In 1917, possibly due to his nationalistic views, Fr Shaw was dispatched to India, and later to Mesopotamia.Fr. Thomas V. Nolan was the Provincial of the Irish Province of the Society of Jesus (1912-1922) and was a member of the Distribution Committee which looked after the welfare and distribution of the Belgian refugees who arrived in Ireland as a consequence of the First World War.
