Mother Just a few lines to let you
know I am well. I received your letter,
papers &parcel all right. I wish you
would send me a razor as the one I
have is no good. I see by the paper
that Sergt Spence is home after being
wounded in the big push. Is the fishing
still as good as it was, tell all the
children I was asking for them, also
Mrs Mc Aulery and Annie. All at present.

Letter from Samuel Shaw to his mother, Martha Shaw, reassuring her that he is well.
Samuel requests that Martha send him a new razor as his is not working and discusses
the recent news of sergeant Spence's injury in the 'big push'. Before signing off
Samuel sends his love to his younger siblings.
Samuel Henry Shaw (1896-1967) was a sergeant with the 10th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling
Fusiliers. He volunteered for active service in September 1914. Before enlisting Samuel
was a member of the Portstewart Company, Coleraine Battalion, North Derry Regiment,
Ulster Volunteer Force. Samuel served in France, and was wounded during the Battle
of the Somme in July 1916 and again in early 1917 and in 1918. Before the War he was
employed as a ironmonger's assistant.
