Letter from Samuel Shaw to Martha Shaw, 15 December 1915
Mother, Just a few lines
to let you know I am well.
I received your letter all
right. The weather out here
now is very cold & wet. I
hope all the youngsters
are in good health also
yourself. I got photo of
Charlie Bacon in the naval
rig and he looks well in
it too. I wrote to Bill a
few days ago. John Ross
gave me his address. I
don't expect we shall
hear much news from home
until after Xmas, nor you'se 2 at home from us, as there
is no postal service for
the troops. Still don't 1fret
I'll be all right. As we are
resting back in a village
behind the trenches untill
the New Year. All the boys
are looking forward to
days at home after the New
Year. I think this is all
at present. Wishing you
all a Merry Xmas & a Happy
New Year. From
Your Loving Son Sammie P.S. We are going to have a good
time here at Xmas.
Letter from Samuel Shaw to his mother, Martha Shaw, regarding his life at the front. Samuel writes about the weather and two other friends who are also serving. Samuel also reassures his mother and tells her not to worry if he does not hear from her as there is no postal service for the troops. Samuel Henry Shaw (1896-1967) was a sergeant with the 10th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. He volunteered for active service in September 1914. Before enlisting Samuel was a member of the Portstewart Company, Coleraine Battalion, North Derry Regiment, Ulster Volunteer Force. Samuel served in France, and was wounded during the Battle of the Somme in July 1916 and again in early 1917 and in 1918. Before the war he was employed as a ironmonger's assistant.
