Dad Just a few lines to
let you know I am well. I received
your letter all right. You will feel
lonely now with the boys away
again. I am sure they enjoyed them—
selves after been so long at sea. Jessie
will feel lonely tonow Billis gone to. How
is all the children getting on, tell toby
I was asking for him, he will be
quite a big boy now, is he and young
Scott as chummy now as they used to
be. Tell Mr Mc Aulery I was asking
for him &Annie. I think this is
all at present. With love to all.

Letter from Samuel Shaw to his father, James Shaw, reassuring his father that he is
well and checking in on the children at home. Samuel comments on the loneliness his
father must feel now all the boys have gone.
Samuel Henry Shaw (1896-1967) was a sergeant with the 10th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling
Fusiliers. He volunteered for active service in September 1914. Before enlisting Samuel
was a member of the Portstewart Company, Coleraine Battalion, North Derry Regiment,
Ulster Volunteer Force. Samuel served in France, and was wounded during the Battle
of the Somme in July 1916 and again in early 1917 and in 1918. Before the War he was
employed as a ironmonger's assistant. His father, James, was a fisherman.
