1 BEF 26.5.16 My Dear
Mother Just a few lines
to let you know I am well.
I received your letters, parcel
& paper allright. we are
having lovely weather here
now. It's champion to get
back for a rest after spend—
ing the winter in the trenches.
We have football matches &
sports here & some evenings
concert parties & pictures. I
hope this finds you all in
the best of health. I sup—
pose Jessie is quite a big
girl now. I am glad to see
that the boys in blue are
still on the maps. I am 2 glad to see that the fish—
ing is good. I suppose
the Port will be getting
quite busy now. Tell every—
body I was asking for
them especially Mr N. Auley
& Annie. All at present
With love to all. I remain

Letter from Samuel Shaw to his mother, Martha Shaw, describing the entertainments provided for the soldiers upon their return from the winter trenches. Samuel Henry Shaw (1896-1967) was a sergeant with the 10th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. He volunteered for active service in September 1914. Before enlisting Samuel was a member of the Portstewart Company, Coleraine Battalion, North Derry Regiment, Ulster Volunteer Force. Samuel served in France, and was wounded during the Battle of the Somme in July 1916 and again in early 1917 and in 1918. Before the War he was employed as a ironmonger's assistant.
