Letter from Francis Sheehy Skeffington to Miss Lawless, 1 February 1916

Rathmines
2014; 2014;16
Dear Miss Lawless,
I have heard of you for a long time, and I have no idea how
you regard my latest essays in rebellion. Never the less, I venture
o appeal to you once more on behalf of the IRISH CITIZEN.
You may remember (I think I wrote to you about it at the time)
that in September 1914, in order to meet the printers pressing de-;
mands, I raised a loan of £100 from a bank, on a guarantee signed by
three names in addition to my own. Owing to the continuous, (though
slight) loss on the paper, I have not been able to pay off this; nor
would the bank press for repayment so long as the interest is paid
regularly, which of course has been done. Now, however, one of the
guarantors withdraws her name, 2014;because she favours conscription,
and objects to the line we have taken with regard to that matter.
Unless I can find a third name to replace that withdrawn, the bank
will call up the entire sum, which at present would be disastrous.
Could you assist me in this emergency, or suggest anyone who would?
It is very difficult to find anyone of financial stability who does
not object to the IRISH CITIZEN (or to its proprietor) on some ground
or other! The other two guarantors (whose names I will give you on hearing
that you are prepared to consider the matter) are both good financial sureties. user commentAll letters sent to me through the post are opened by the secret
censorship, 2014; steamed and 2014;gummed. A note left in at the I.W.F.L
rooms would reach me.
