Letter from Francis Sheehy Skeffington to Lillian Metge, 1 February 1916
Rathmines, Dublin. 1—II.—16 Dear Mrs. Metge, Your letter and enclosures reached me duly. I am returning
the Agenda, which I was very glad to see. I will not, of course, make
any public use of it. Many thanks for your hints re societies to write to in England;
I am following this up. But there are so many things on hand here
that I see I shall not be able to visit England so soon as i had ex-
pected. Conscription being (for the present) disposed of, the next
big Irish campaign will be against taxation, — a demand that Ireland
shall be exempted from war-taxation, not being interested in the war
and being already taxed far in excess of the country's taxable capac-
ity. I expect a big movement on these lines to develop before and
after the next Budget; and the developments and possibilities are
very interesting. Sheehy Skeffington
Letter from Francis Sheehy Skeffington to Lillian Metge regarding several political issues including conscription, suffrage and the anti-taxation movement. Francis anticipates a big move toward the anti-war taxation campaign as the next budget approaches. Francis Sheehy Skeffington (1878-1916), journalist, was a prominent feminist, activist and co-founder of the Irish Women's Franchise league in 1908. In 1912, he and his wife, Hanna Sheehy Skeffington (1877-1946), founded the suffragist newspaper The Irish Citizen. A staunch pacifist and nationalist, Sheehy Skeffington opposed Irish involvement in the Great War. During the Easter Rising, he attempted to organise a civilian defence force to prevent looting and saved the life of a British officer under fire. Arrested on the evening of Tuesday 25 April 1916, Sheehy Skeffington and two other civilians were shot by firing squad on the morning of Wednesday 26 April. Lillian M. Metge (1871-1954) was a militant suffragist, a member of the Women's Social and Political Union, and a contributor to the Irish Citizen.
