Letter from Francis Sheehy Skeffington to Laurence Ginnell, 13 February 1916
Rathmines, Dublin Dear Mr.Ginnell, Many thanks for sending me the question about Ryan. I have not
heard of his being molested since, so I presume the public inquiry
was enough to warn them off. With regards to the other two points which I wrote to you
about too late for last session, :&#x 2014 the Glasgow affair has been somewhat
cleared up since; you will have seen the paragraph about it in nationally
. the second youth arrested is called Reuder, not Reid.
They are both charged, I am told with stealing explosives
as regards my cable to Holland witch was stopped, perhaps you
would be good enough to ask wether any cables to Holland which was stopped perhaps you
would be good enough to ask wheter any cables sent by me have been
stopped and whether the money paid for them will be returned besides
this one cable which I know was stopped I suspect that two
others (sent by me to the united states) have also been held up; and
perhaps a general query might elicit some information about these.
Countess Markievicz has been told by police that she must
register as an alien, &#x 2014 her husband being Russian subject, of
course she takes his nationality she has never been asked to
register since the beginning of the war till now. she refuses to
register and is awaiting the next move of the police
I enclose a copy of my letter to Kitchener on the detention of
baggage which may amuse you.
From Francis Sheehy Skeffington to Laurence Ginnell regarding several different issues. After enquiring about his difficulties with censorship Skeffington writes that Countess Markievicz has been asked to register as an alien due to her husband's Russian nationality. Enclosed with the letter was a copy of a letter which Skeffington had sent to Lord Kitchener regarding the detention of baggage. Francis Sheehy Skeffington, journalist, was a prominent feminist, activist and co-founder of the Irish Women's Franchise league in 1908. In 1912, he and his wife, Hanna Sheehy Skeffington (1877-1946), founded the suffragist newspaper The Irish Citizen. A staunch pacifist and nationalist, Sheehy Skeffington opposed Irish involvement in the Great War. During the Easter Rising, he attempted to organise a civilian defence force to prevent looting and saved the life of a British officer under fire. Arrested on the evening of Tuesday 25 April 1916, Sheehy Skeffington and two other civilians were shot by firing squad on the morning of Wednesday 26 April. Laurence Ginnell (1852 – 1923) was an Irish nationalist politician, lawyer, and member of parliament. He initially ran as a member of the Irish Parliamentary Party, but, from 1910 onward he ran as an Independent Nationalist.
