Letter from Joseph Slevin to the Longford Urban District Council, 8 August 1916
1
Town Surveyor & Water Inspectors Report Mr Chairman & Gentlemen I beg to report
that Mr Dergin made an inspection on Friday
last of both Resevoirs and walked the supply
stream from Goshen to the well house. I
pointed out to him that there was no provision
made for the drainage of the labourers cottage
recently built which he made a note
of — J. 2 I find it impossible to get a person to empty the
pits at the back of the corporation houses.
As this is a matter of pressing importance in
the interest of the occupiers of the houses
adjoining and in fact the health of the Town
some means must be devised to have the
nuisance abated at once. There are complaints
about the sanitary condition of Bog Lane. Both Mr Healy and the late Mr Farrell
agreed to have a gate put up at each end
but for some reason the matter was let
drag on. I think it would be well if there
was an order made tonight to have the work
carried out at once. I was informed that there were 2 lambs
that died from arsenical poisoning in a
store in a yard off Main Street. I immediately
went to the place and found the lambs in an
advanced state of decomposition. I got the
owner to sprinkle them with carbolic and
lime and saw them buried the following
morning. I propose getting concrete footpath in
Killashee Street commenced this week. Your obedient Servant Joseph Slevin 8th August 1916
