Letter from Hugh de Fellenberg Montgomery to James Stronge, 9 June 1916.
Copy 9th June, 1916. My dear Stronge, I am writing to Carson as per enclosed. If you have
not already had done so you should hear from Carson or Craig
their full reasons for the advice carson gave us. The secret
reasons are stronger than those stated at the meetings on
Tuesday. I shall go up by first train on Monday, perhaps
I shall meet you at Tynan Station. Yours very truly,
This letter was written by Hugh de Felllenberg Montgomery (1844-1924). He was a landowner and politician. Originally a Liberal and a strong supporter of Gladstone, Montgomery was also a firm Unionist, but by 1916 he believed that Ulster Unionists had no choice but to accept Lloyd George's proposal for a six-county Northern Ireland. The letter was addressed to Sir James Henry Stronge (1849-1928), a barrister and prominent Unionist politician. This letter concerns meetings and advice given by Sir Edward Carson (1854-1935). Carson was a lawyer, politician and the leading figure in Ulster Unionism. He had sanctioned the formation of the paramilitary Ulster Volunteer Force in January 1913 and he helped to found the Ulster provisional government of September 1913. In 1916 he was at the peak of his parliamentary influence and by December was appointed to the first lordship of the admiralty by Lloyd George (1863-1945).
