Letter from Hugh de Fellenberg Montgomery to James Stronge, 3 June 1916
Copy 3rd June, 1916. My dear Stronge, I enclose you a copy of a letter I wrote about
ten days ago, and which some people were very anxious I
should send to the "Times," but which in accordance with
what I consider the best advice I have kept for private
circulation. Perhaps you may think it's a good starting
point for any discussion we may have on Tuesday. You
may very likely be having preparatory conversations on
Monday. I have not yet made up my mind whether I shall
go to Belfast on Monday night or start from here at
5.55 a.m. (4.55 old time) on Tuesday morning. I am going
down to Kinlough near Bundoran for Sunday, but have to be
at Aughnacloy for a meeting at 12 on Monday. Yours very truly,
This letter was written by Hugh de Felllenberg Montgomery (1844-1924). He was a landowner and politician. Originally a Liberal and a strong supporter of Gladstone, Montgomery was also a firm Unionist, but by 1916 he believed that Ulster Unionists had no choice but to accept Lloyd George's proposal for a six-county Northern Ireland. The letter was addressed to Sir James Henry Stronge (1849-1928), a barrister and prominent Unionist politician. Montgomery is writing to Stronge about a letter which he wrote previously and has been advised to send into the 'Times'. Montgomery has decided to keep the letter private but considers it a good starting point for discussion. Montgomery also mentions travel arrangement for the coming week.
