Letter from Hugh de Fellenberg Montgomery (1844-1924) to William Coote (1853-1924). The letter refers to the 10th (Irish) Division of the British army and the figures that were given to Montgomery by the Chaplain of the division. Montgomery describes the 10th as 'the Division which nationalists always talk about as if it consisted exclusively of Home Rulers, who were sent to Suvla Bay.' He surmises that a good many Church of England soldiers enlisted with the 10th, making them 'presumably good Unionists.'Originally a Liberal and a strong supporter of Gladstone, Montgomery was also a firm Unionist, but by 1916 he believed that Ulster Unionists had no choice but to accept Lloyd George's proposal for a six-county Northern Ireland. Coote was a politician and in 1916 he was representing South Tyrone in the Imperial Parliament as a Unionist and continued to do so until 1922.
