Letter from R. Barry O'Brien to Bishop Edward Thomas O'Dwyer, 12 February 1916
which your Lordship
gave to the movement for
creating a Celtic Cross
to the memory of the
soldiers of the Irish
Brigade who fought,
2 and won at Foutenoy,
emboldens me to
approach your Lordship
on a kindred subject
I am sure that you
sympathise with the
position of the Irish Nuns
of Ypres who have been
made the victims of the
Ruthlessness of the foreigner
today as their predecessors
were made the victims of the
Ruthlessness of the foreigner
two hundred years ago
It struck us that it
would be in the fitness
of things to replant those
Irish Nuns in the old soil
and really a most
3 unexpected and fortunate
chance for doing this has
offered itself to us. I am sure
that a public word from your
Lordship would hasten the
success of our movement
and in any event I feel that
your Lordship will forgive
me for trespassing upon you
because I 'Remember Limerick' . I remain dear Lord
Bishop
Sincerely Yours, R. Barry O'Brien
This letter was written by Richard Barry O’Brien (1847–1918), to Bishop Edward Thomas O'Dwyer (1842-1917), who served as the Bishop of Limerick from 1888 until his death. O’Brien wrote this letter to O‘Dwyer on behalf of Irish nuns in Ypres. According to O’Brien these nuns have been made the victims of the ‘ruthlessness of the foreigner’ and an opportunity has arisen to ‘replant’ these nuns in the ‘old soil’. O’Brien requests that O’Dwyer make a public statement to hasten the nun’s cause.O’Brien was an Irish nationalist biographer, historian, and publicist. His best known work concerned the life of Charles Stewart Parnell (1846 – 1891), a leading nationalist figure in Ireland and leader of the Home Rule Party, 1882-1891.
