Letter from Father Willie Doyle S.J. to Mai, 22 January 1916
To send on my
letter to the
Father to S.V.L. J2/83 (79) BandonCamp
22/1/16.
Dearest Mai, Your welcome
letter and box of badges
have reached me safely;
ever so many thanks for
both and also for your
two Xmas letters, which
I thought I had acknow-
ledged before. You must be praying
very hard to prevent 2 my departure for the
Front as there has been
another delay, owing to
sickness among the men
so that we probably
shall not leave now
much before Feb: 15th In some ways I am
not sorry as there is
little doing in France
just now and we
are better off in many
respects where we are,
the only danger being
an awful death from
over feeding! 3 I had a few days in
London this week, business
& pleasure combined, one
result of which is that
I was fortunate in
getting Fr Bernard Vaughan
to promise to come
down & give the men
a lecture. He will
be here tomorrow evening
and I am sure will
give us a treat. You need not be
uneasy about my
health, which, thank God,
is all that I have
said regarding it. I am 4 really ever so well and have been so
since I left home, with the exception
of the one cold which was bound
to come. At present I am culti-
vating a hard, tough skin to keep
out German bullets. Will you please thank Sr Monica
for her kind letter which I shall
answer later if I can. I enclose in this
letter 1 lb of the very best Blessing which
you can share with Sr Philomena (I hope
you won't fight over the sharing) and with
every loving wish and many a prayer for
your speedy conversion. As ever, dearest Mai,
Your loving brother
Will.
Letter from Irish Jesuit Chaplain, Fr Willie Doyle SJ (1873-1917) to Mai. After thanking Mai for her letters Doyle rites that their deployment has been postponed again. Doyle reassures Mai not to worry about his health as he has been quite well apart from the one cold. Fr Willie Doyle served as a military chaplain with the 8th Battalion of the Royal Irish Fusiliers, 16th Irish Division. In April 1916 he was recommended for the Military Cross (MC) for helping to dig wounded men out of a collapsed shelter under fire. He moved to the 8th Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers around Christmas, 1916. He was killed during the third battle of Ypres while going to the aid of a wounded man near Frezenberg and his body was never recovered. His name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial, Zonnebeke, Belgium.
