Letter from Michael Ryan to The Registrar, Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, 12 November 1915

HEATHFIELD
CHORLEY OLD ROAD 22
BOLTON Lane's. November 12th 1915. The Registrar
Royal College of Physicians
Dublin. Dear Sir, I beg to offer my sincere thanks
to the President and Fellows for their kind
consideration of my case in Oct 1914
and for the resolution of the College to
re&-instate me. I now wish to ask them if they cannot
possibly bring their valuable influence to
bear to persuade the General Medical
Council to restore my name to the
Medical Register as, owing to the serious
shortage of doctors for the Army I wish to offer
my services to the War Office as early as possible
and I venture to think if the Medical Council
understood my case thoroughly they would
not refuse. I have already suffered two years cruel
punishment and in the absence of my son who
is away on Active Service I have tried to
manage his business, but owing to his absence 2 and the War it has had to be disposed of and
I am faced with financial ruin. In doing that for which my name was re-
moved, I can truthfully and conscientiously
say I acted in perfect innocence and good
faith and had no intent to do wrong or
deceive, and, being guileless myself, I gave
others credit for being the same. I gave credence to the statements of a man
who at that time commanded the respect
and trust of everyone in the town but who
afterwards proved himself to be a wicked
man and who made use of my believing
nature to induce me to fall into the
trap which he had carefully prepared for
me to further his own nefarious designs.
This fact was emphasized by Mr Justice
Bailache at the Court of Appeal. Knowing the urgent need for doctors, the
following gentlemen who are anxious that
I should be re-instated, have promised
me their support, - Colonel French, Sir
Thos Flitcroft, Alderman Seddon, (Mayor
of Bolton), and I can also refer you to
Mr Russell Solicitor 11 Wood Street Bolton
who has known me intimately for years.
One gentleman intended writing to the Med.
Council on my behalf but the meeting
took place earlier than he expected. 3 It has been suggested that an Emergency
meeting of the Council might be called
on my behalf under present urgent
circumstances. I have been taught a severe lesson
which will make me more careful in
future and if re-instated I promise
that the Medical Council shall have no
reason to regret this having performed
a generous and patriotic action and
also that I shall endeavour to uphold
the homour and dignity of the Medical
Profession. I shall be glad if you will hand this
letter to the President without delay,
and I hope to have an early and
favourable reply. Yours faithfully, M. J. Ryan. MacD.C.
