1 (From F. O' Donnell) 38 Treganther Rd, The Boltons, S.W July 4, 1916 Dear Sir In reference to my visit this morning, I
should mention that the secret papers in question are
said to have been shown by the Home Office to the Jury.
This is a statement of men of high authority
who are in a position to know. Miss Boyle O'Reilly and Mr Kilty, the
latter described to me as a distinguished journalist,
are among the Americans who have been told or who
have seen the incriminating mater.
The Editor of the London Daily Chronicle is one of
the six English. Another who has seen I believe is
Mr. Clement Shorter, who appears to be convinced of
the guilt altho' married to a patriotic Irishwoman Yours faithfully

This is a copy of a letter from F. O’Donnell (1846-1916), London, to George Gavan Duffy (1882-1951). Gavan Duffy was acting as solicitor to Sir Roger Casement (1864-1916) in his trial for treason. Casement had been arrested in Kerry after a failed landing of German arms for use in the Easter Rising. O'Donnell states that the ‘secret papers’ in question (The Black Diaries) are said to have been shown by the Home Office to the trial's jury. He also lists others who claim to have seen the ‘incriminating matter’. The 'Black Diaries' contained explicit material about Casement's personal life and were used to undermine his case.The correspondent is mostly probably Francis Hugh O'Donnell, a nationalist politician and writer. He died in London in November 1916.
