directed by the Secretary of State to refer you to section 6
of the Capital Punishment Amendment Act 1868 which provides
that the body of every offender executed shall be buried within the
walls of the prison within which judgement of death is executed on

A letter from E. Blackwell, under secretary of state for the Home Office, to George Gavan Duffy (1882-1951). The letter is a reply to Gavan Duffy's letter of the same date and refers him to the Capital Punishment Amendment Act 1868, which requires the burial of persons executed to be buried in the prison. Gavan Duffy had requested release of the body to the family. This letter is dated on 3 August, which is the date of Casement's execution.George Gavan Duffy was an Irish politician, barrister and judge. He unsuccessfully defended Roger Casement at his trial for high treason after the Easter Rising.
