This is a copy of a letter from F. O’Donnell (1846-1916), London, to George Gavan Duffy (1882-1951). Gavan Duffy was acting as solicitor to Sir Roger Casement (1864-1916) in his trial for treason. Casement had been arrested in Kerry after a failed landing of German arms for use in the Easter Rising. O'Donnell states that the ‘secret papers’ in question (The Black Diaries) are said to have been shown by the Home Office to the trial's jury. He also lists others who claim to have seen the ‘incriminating matter’. The 'Black Diaries' contained explicit material about Casement's personal life and were used to undermine his case. The correspondent is mostly probably Francis Hugh O'Donnell, a nationalist politician and writer. He died in London in November 1916.
