1 58 Aughrim St June 11th 1916
Sunday My dear Jim
On Friday last I
got a letter of mine
confirmed from Stafford
with a notice that
you had been released
Needless to say I
was delighted but
I had a letter from 2
your sister this morning
and she tells me
you are still in
Stafford. It must
have been some one
else that was released
I hope you got my
other letters. Are you
allowed to smoke?
I had a letter from
the Councillor on
Friday night and
they are not allowed 3
to smoke he says. He
sees Liam every
morning and evening
at exercise and they
can talk as much
as they please. They
can write only two
letters a week. Are
you allowed the papers
or would you like
books magazines
or anything? I hope
you will write when 4
you can, but of
course I quite under
stand that you
have to get round
all your friends
Everyone has been
enquiring for you
I dont think there is
anything else I can
tell you. I am sending
a paper Kindest regards

James Ryan (1891-1970) studied medicine in UCD. He was appointed chief medical officer in the GPO during the Easter Rising. After the Rising he was imprisoned in Stafford and, later, Frongoch and was released in August 1916. Ryan was later a founder member of Fianna Fáil and a government minister. This letter was written while Ryan was a prisoner in Stafford. The writer notes that she had heard Ryan was released but that he is still in Stafford, refers to friends and fellow internees and asks if he would anything sent to him.
