1 H.M. Prison, Dartmoor 31 May 1916. Sir Madam Thom wD Fitzgerald I have to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 29th inst
and to inform you in reply that the above named
has written a letter to you which will no
doubt reach you in a day or two. You
are entitled to reply to it. During the
first year of imprisonment letters & visits
are allowed every four months.

A letter from the governor or Dartmoor Prison, Major E. Reade, to Mabel FitzGerald (née Washington McConnell) (1884-1958), wife of politician and intellectual Desmond FitzGerald (1888-1947). The letter advises Mrs FitzGerald that a letter from her husband is on its way to her. It also outlines the prison's letter and visiting regime.Mabel was a former governess in London. She later vigorously canvassed her former acquaintances in London's liberal circles for support for Francis Sheehy Skeffington during his hunger strike in 1915. Both Mabel and Desmond would serve in the GPO garrison during Easter Week.
