Letter to Dr Kathleen Lynn from the Assistant Provost Marshal, 28 May 1916
has been passed to me. The property taken from you in Ship
Street Barracks is in my possession &
will be handed over when I am
authorised to do so. As some of
the prisoners effects amount to as
much as £80 I have had to ask
the question as to whether such monies
are to be handed over whilst the
owner is in detention. I presume your effects at Liberty
Hall were destroyed when the place
was bombarded, but of this I have
no personal knowledge. 2 Yours faithfully Emmanuel May
This is a letter to Dr. Kathleen Lynn (1874-1955) from the Assistant Provost Marshal at Dublin Castle. In this letter, the official states that property confiscated from Dr Lynn in Shop Street Barracks is in his possession, and will be returned to her when authorisation is granted to do so. He notes that as some prisoners have had property confiscated with a value of up to £80, he is obliged to ascertain whether prisoners' effects should be returned to them while they are still detained. The official suggests that Dr Lynn's effects at Liberty Hall have been destroyed during the bombardment, but allows that he has no personal knowledge of this.Dr Kathleen Lynn was a medical practitioner, a suffragist, a nationalist, and a revolutionary. Lynn was Chief Medical Officer of the Irish Citizen Army during Easter 1916, and was a part of the City Hall garrison, of which she took command of the garrison after the death of Seán Connolly on the first day of the Rising. After independence, Lynn played a major role in improving public health, and played a significant role in the eradication of tuberculosis in Ireland.
